1. Understanding Kalyug
In Sanatan Dharma, time has been divided into four Yugas – Satyug, Tretayug, Dwaparyug, and Kalyug.
Satyug – the age of truth and righteousness.
Tretayug – the age of ideals and maryada (discipline).
Dwaparyug – the age of partial truth and conflicts.
Kalyug – the age dominated by falsehood, greed, and adharma.
Kalyug is recognized by:
The decline of Dharma and moral values.
Weakening of family bonds and traditions.
Over-dependence on material pleasures.
Acceptance of falsehood and unrighteousness as normal.
The scriptures mention that in Kalyug, devotion, remembrance of God, and penance are the only ways to attain peace and liberation.
2. The Chhath Festival: Tradition and Uniqueness
Chhath is one of the most ancient and scientific festivals of India.
It is dedicated to the worship of Sun God and Chhathi Maiya.
Devotees observe a 36-hour long nirjala fast (without water).
The festival is a direct worship of the five elements of nature – water, air, sky, fire, and earth.
It is not just a ritual but a symbol of purity, discipline, and austerity.
3. Relevance of Chhath in Kalyug
Amid the challenges of Kalyug, Chhath emerges as a divine solution:
Freedom from Materialism
– In a world driven by greed and show-off, Chhath teaches simplicity, restraint, and inner strength.
Environmental Protection
– At a time when pollution and ecological imbalance are serious threats, Chhath emphasizes the worship of rivers, ponds, and the Sun, sending a message of environmental harmony.
Social Unity
– At Chhath ghats, caste, class, and social barriers dissolve. People from all walks of life stand together and offer arghya to the Sun, symbolizing equality and brotherhood.
Health and Lifestyle Benefits
– The strict fasting, purity, and vegetarian food bring detoxification and mental peace. Modern science also acknowledges the health benefits of such practices.
Message of Global Brotherhood
– While Kalyug promotes division and conflict, Chhath inspires universal well-being and human unity.
4. Chhath: The Redeemer in Kalyug
The Puranas state:
ЁЯСЙ “Kalau kevalam n─Бma-dh─Бraс╣Зam muktaye”
Meaning, in Kalyug, devotion and remembrance of the divine is the only path to liberation.
Chhath embodies this principle by combining:
Faith and devotion
Discipline and penance
A sense of collective well-being
5. Conclusion
In the darkness of Kalyug, Chhath shines as a guiding light. It is not just a religious festival but the soul of Indian culture that presents to the world an ideal of nature worship, health, and harmony.
ЁЯСЙ Thus, it can be rightly said:
“In Kalyug, the true path of liberation and collective welfare is through the observance of the Chhath Festival, which connects humanity with God, Nature, and Society.”
