Scriptural Significance of Chhath Vrat — An Authentic Overview
Chhath Mahaparv is one of the most ancient and sacred traditions of Indian culture. Its roots lie deep within the Vedic system of Sūrya-upāsanā (Sun worship) and the concept of Ṣaṣṭhī Devi, the divine protectress of health and progeny.
🔸 Vedic Foundation of Chhath Vrat
The Ṛgveda (10th Mandala) presents the Sun as Ādideva and affirms that the rays of the Sun are the life-giving force for all beings. The Yajurveda (7/42–45) explicitly prescribes the offering of water (arghya) to the rising and setting Sun:
“Sūryāya svāhā; sūryāya idam na mama.”
This very ritual of offering water later evolved into the practice of arghya during sunrise and sunset, as observed in Chhath Vrat today.
🔸 Ṣaṣṭhī Devi – Scriptural Representation
| Text | Description |
|---|---|
| Skanda Purāṇa | Describes Ṣaṣṭhī Devi as Devasenā (consort of Skanda Kartikeya) and the protectress of children. |
| Padma Purāṇa | Describes her as the sixth divine manifestation of Prakṛti, the one who bestows progeny and prosperity. |
| Devī Bhāgavata Purāṇa | Calls her Ṣaṣṭhī Svarūpiṇī, to be worshipped on the sixth lunar day for the welfare of the family and children. |
👉 In the folk tradition, this same deity is worshipped as Chhathī Maiyā.
🔸 Transformation into a Folk Vrat (Mithila–Magadha Region)
The regions of Mithila, Kosala and Magadha were historically associated with the Solar lineage (Sūrya–kul). A specific ritual observance developed here for health, rejuvenation and protection of offspring, performed especially on the Ṣaṣṭhī tithi.
Over time, this ritual gradually became a combined form of Ṣaṣṭhī Devi worship + Vedic Sūrya Arghya, which later came to be known as Chhath Vrat.
🔸 Spiritual Significance of the Vrat
1️⃣ Purification of body and mind – Through fasting, restraint and prayer.
2️⃣ Harmony with Nature – Offering arghya to the Sun while standing in water symbolizes gratitude to the five elements.
3️⃣ Healing and Rejuvenation – Vedic texts recognise the therapeutic benefits of solar rays (especially during dawn and dusk).
4️⃣ Protection of progeny & family – Ṣaṣṭhī Devi grants well-being and longevity of children.
🔸 Integrated Scriptural Basis – At a Glance
| Aspect | Scriptural Source |
|---|---|
| Sun Arghya | Ṛgveda, Yajurveda, Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa |
| Ṣaṣṭhī Devi | Skanda Purāṇa, Padma Purāṇa, Devī Bhāgavata |
| Health & Rejuvenation | Brāhmaṇa texts, Āyurveda (Solar therapy) |
| Development as a folk ritual | Mithila–Magadha cultural tradition |
🔸 Conclusion
Chhath Vrat is not merely a regional folk festival. It is a unique synthesis of the Vedic practice of Sun worship and the Purāṇic reverence for Ṣaṣṭhī Devi. Through this vrat, one
- offers gratitude to Nature,
- receives vital energy from the Sun,
- and invokes the blessings of the Divine Mother for the well-being of future generations.
Hence, the festival has been described as “a ritual that ensures the well-being of all three worlds – past, present and future.”
🔔 Chhath Vrat thus stands as a shining example of the deep harmony between Vedic philosophy and folk devotion in Indian culture.
